Studies on Salmonella Isolated in Taegu Area

Abstract
68 strains of Salmonellae were isolated from 413 specimens obtained from suspected patients in the Kyung-Pook University Hospital and the Presbyterian Hospital in Taegu. These strains were classified 4 strains as S. paratyphi A, 2 as S. paratyphi C, one as S. typhi-suis, and 61 as S. typhosa.
Among them, 52 strains were isolated from 209 blood specimens, 9 from 152 feces, 2 from 4 bile, and 5 from 20 intestinal juices. None was isolated from 28 urine specimens.
41 strains out of 52 were isolated from blood taken within 1 to 2 weeks of onset of diseases, while the rest was isolated from blood taken after 3 weeks of onset of diseases.
Sensitivity of these strains to antibiotics of current use was tested by the tube dilution method and it was found that the number of strains resistant to streptomycin was most predominant and then those resistant to penicillin, terramycin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin and aureomycin were followed in the order of decreasing numbers.
The majority of strains were resistant to three or four of antibiotics.
